Found in the deep waters off Australia and New Zealand, the Blobfish is perhaps the most unfairly maligned animal on the planet. In its natural habitat at depths of up to 1,200 meters, it looks like a perfectly normal fish — the iconic drooping, melting appearance is the result of its gelatinous flesh, which is adapted to withstand crushing deep-sea pressure, decompressing catastrophically when brought rapidly to the surface. It is, essentially, a victim of circumstance rather than nature's worst design decision.
