Dragon Head Caterpillar
(Polyura athamas)
Found in parts of Asia, the Dragon Head Caterpillar is the larval form of a moth that has one of the most dramatic threat displays of any insect. When disturbed, it rears up and inflates the front of its body, revealing a dramatically patterned false face designed to resemble the head of a much larger and more dangerous animal — complete with false eyes and markings that suggest an open mouth. Whether it resembles a dragon, a snake, or simply something alarming, the effect is strikingly convincing!
