Helmeted Hornbill
(Rhinoplax vigil)

Found in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, the Helmeted Hornbill is immediately distinguished by its extraordinary casque — a solid block of keratin on top of its bill that accounts for around 11% of its total body weight.

Unlike the hollow casques of other hornbills, this one is completely solid, and males use it as a battering ram — engaging in dramatic aerial jousting contests, crashing their casques together in mid-air at high speed to compete for territory and mates!

A closer look at its bill!
