Found across the Americas and parts of the Old World tropics, the Trap-Jaw Ant has the fastest moving predatory appendage of any known animal — its mandibles snap shut at speeds of up to 230 kilometers per hour in under a millisecond. As the gif shows, this closing force is so extreme that when aimed at the ground it can launch the ant several times its body height into the air — a behaviour used both to fling away threats and to escape danger entirely by catapulting itself out of reach!
