Found in the deep oxygen minimum zones of the world's oceans, the Vampire Squid is neither a true squid nor an octopus but its own distinct order — a living fossil that has remained essentially unchanged. When threatened it inverts its cloak-like webbing over its body, studded with spine-like projections, turning itself into an inside-out spiky ball.
Despite its name and dramatic appearance, it feeds gently on marine snow — tiny particles of organic matter drifting down from above!
The squid's defensive posture!
