Aye-Aye
(Daubentonia madagascariensis)
Found in the rainforests of Madagascar, the Aye-Aye is one of the most unusual primates on the planet! It uses a technique called percussive foraging — tapping rapidly on tree bark with its elongated middle finger and listening for the hollow sound that indicates a grub tunnel beneath, essentially using its hearing the way bats use echolocation. You can see an example of this in the gif below. Once located, it gnaws through the bark and uses that same spindly finger to hook the grub out!
