Found in woodland or grasslands in temperate zones all over the world.
Ranges from 5 - 13mm (0.1 - 0.5in), though some can reach up to 2.5cm (1in) in length.

Lives around a few weeks to 3 years.
These beetles get their name from their unique defensive ability to spray a hot noxious chemical from its abdomen! This spray is a mix of two chemicals, the reaction of which reaches close to the boiling point of water proving fatal to attacking insects!
