Found in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas, Caecilians are amphibians that look like large earthworms — completely limbless, nearly blind, and spending most of their lives burrowing underground.
Some species practice a strange form of parental care where the young use short, blunt teeth to peel and eat the mother's nutrient-rich outer skin, which she regrows repeatedly for them to consume again!
Adult Caecilians may have glands near their teeth that secrete toxins, potentially making them the first amphibians capable of delivering a venomous bite — though this is still being investigated.
A Caecilian bearing its teeth!
