Habitat: Found in all continents except for Antarctica. Usually found in woodlands or grasslands in the temperate zones.
Diet: Other insects.
Size: Ranges from 5 to 13mm (about 1/4 to 1/2 in), though some can reach up to2.5cm (1in) long.
Lifecycle: Varies from a few weeks to up to 3 years.
Specialized Functions
These beetles get their name from their unique defensive ability to spray a hot noxious chemical from its abdomen! This spray is a mix of two chemicals, the reaction of which reaches close to the boiling point of water proving fatal to attacking insects!
