Gila Monster

Designation: Venomous Lizard
Habitat: Its found in Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico.
Diet: Feeds on small mammals, small birds, snakes, lizards, frogs, insects, other invertebrates, and eggs.
Size: May reach 51 to 56cm (20 to 22in) in total length.
Lifecycle: Lives up to 20 years but can exceed 30 years in captivity.
Specialized Functions
The Gila Monster has a gland that propels venom to the base of its lower teeth that it chews into its prey or attacker. While its normally not fatal in humans, its said to have the most painful venom produced by any vertebrates! On a more positive note, certain chemicals in its venom has been used for diabetes treatment and other chemicals have been shown to inhibit the growth of lung cancer.
Between its scales are pearl shaped bones that give the Gila Monster its beady appearance. These bony plates serve as a kind of armor giving it protection from predators and harsh environments!
Many lizards regenerate when they are lost, but not the Gila Monster! Its thick tail is used to store energy in the form of fat that allows it to survive longer periods without food. The fatter the tail the healthier the Gila Monster.
