Diabolical Ironclad Beetle
(Phloeodes diabolicus)
Found in oak woodlands across western North America, the Diabolical Ironclad Beetle has no wings and cannot fly — but it barely needs to. Its exoskeleton is made up of a series of interlocking, jigsaw-like layers so precisely engineered that it can withstand being run over by a car without being crushed! Engineers have actually studied its structure to develop stronger yet flexible joints for aerospace applications.
