Found in the rivers and floodplains of the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America, the Electric Eel is not actually an eel at all — it’s more closely related to catfish and carp!
Its body contains three specialized electric organs that together make up the majority of its length. One is used for navigation and sensing its surroundings in murky water, while the other two can deliver powerful electric discharges of up to 600 volts — enough to stun prey or deter much larger animals, including humans! Other species of electric eel have been recorded producing electric discharges up to 860 volts!
