Fanal Forest

Located on the island of Madeira in Portugal, the Fanal Forest is a remnant of the ancient Laurisilva — a type of subtropical laurel forest that once covered much of southern Europe millions of years ago, now surviving only on the Macaronesian islands.

The ancient, gnarled trees draped in moss and frequently shrouded in low-hanging mist give it an atmosphere so otherworldly that it has been used as inspiration for fantasy settings!
