Found across the grasslands and mountains of South America, the Guanaco is the wild ancestor of the domesticated llama and one of the largest wild land mammals on the continent. It has an impressive adaptation for high altitude living — its blood contains roughly four times as many red blood cells per litre as a human's, allowing it to thrive in the thin air of the Andes!
