Hairy Frog

Hairy Frog
(Trichobatrachus robustus)

Found in Central Africa, the Hairy Frog — also known as the Wolverine Frog — is arguably one of the most unsettling amphibians on the planet. The “hair” on males is actually thin strands of skin packed with blood vessels, thought to help absorb more oxygen!

But its most alarming defense mechanism is its retractable claws — when threatened, it deliberately breaks its own toe bones and forces them through its skin to create sharp claws! Afterwards the bones passively retract as the tissue heals on its own.

Here is a close-up of its "claws"!
