Hoatzin
(Opisthocomus hoazin)
Found in the swamps and riverbanks of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, the Hoatzin is one of the most ancient and bizarre birds alive today.
Its chicks hatch with small functional claws on their wings — used to grip branches and climb back into the nest if they fall into the water below.
Adults are no less strange, fermenting their food in a specialized crop rather than a stomach, which gives them a persistent and notably unpleasant smell that has earned them the nickname "stinkbird"!
A baby Hoatzin holding on with its claws!
