Mantis Shrimp
(Odontodactylus scyllarus)
Found across tropical and subtropical coral reefs, the Peacock Mantis Shrimp is one of the ocean’s most remarkable — and terrifying — little creatures. While humans see three types of color receptors, the Mantis Shrimp has sixteen, allowing it to perceive a range of light including ultraviolet and polarized light that is completely invisible to us!
It also comes armed with a devastating dactyl club that strikes with the speed and force of a bullet, capable of shattering aquarium glass— while other mantis shrimp species wield a spear-like appendage for impaling softer prey instead! It is, without question, one of the most dangerous animals for its size on the planet!
