Piranha
(Pygocentrus nattereri)
Found throughout the rivers and lakes of the Amazon Basin in South America, the Red-Bellied Piranha is far more subtle than its fearsome reputation suggests! While they capable of stripping prey to the bone, they are actually opportunistic feeders that eat fish, insects, and plant matter — and are themselves prey to river dolphins, caimans, and large birds.
Did you know that Piranhas are more active and aggressive during the dry season? As water levels drop, food becomes scarce and they become concentrated in shrinking pools, making them far more dangerous than usual!
