Resplendent Quetzal
(Pharomachrus mocinno)
Found in the cloud forests of Central America, the Resplendent Quetzal was considered sacred by the Aztec and Maya civilisations and used as a symbol of freedom — partly because the bird notoriously refuses to survive in captivity.
The male's tail feathers can grow up to a meter long and shimmer between vivid green and blue depending on the light!
