Specialized Functions

002.jpg

Unlike other wading birds, the Shoebill relies entirely on vision. Once it spots its prey it launches a quick strike! It has about a 60% chance to yield prey per strike.

Despite its size, this bird can still fly! It boasts an impressive wingspan of over 7 feet but its not the fastest flyer. At only 150 flaps per minute, this bird is more of a stalker than a flyer!

Its bill is not only for striking! Its also capable of making a clattering noise as a form of communication! Have a listen!
